Alicia Bunch, COO of Lady Jane's, caught up with a very excited Jasmine to get a good look at the incredible girl who will represent Lady Jane's in 2018:
Position & Locations: Stylist - Birmingham, MI
AB: When did you discover that you wanted a career in the beauty industry?
JD: Ever since I was a young girl, I was obsessed with beauty and being feminine. In my junior year of high school I figured my creativity and special eye can impact the beauty industry so I enrolled in cosmetology school while I was in high school. I feel very blessed that I listened to my heart and found something I love doing at a young age.
AB: What interested you in being part of the Lady Jane's team?
JD: When I first heard about the company, I thought it was a great concept -- a growing company that allowed beautiful, talented women to build their business in a fun environment. I also wanted to be able to break the stereotype that women can't be as good as male barbers. I prove people wrong everyday!
AB: How long have you worked at LJ's?
JD: A little over 4 years.
AB: Why do you think you were selected as the LJ Girl for 2018?
JD: I believe my tenacious energy, passion, and hardwork has led me to be chosen as the LJ Girl for 2018. At the age of 19, I became an elite stylist under the LJ umbrella; building my business to more than 400 requests/appointments in a three month span. I constantly strive to do better for myself and my clientele. I work really hard to make my clients happy and comfortable. Also, I want them to return to see me again. This might sound selfish, but I want guys to return as “Jasmine's client”. It's funny because the girls at my first location could always tell my clients the moment they walked in from the fashion-forward looks I would give them. In order to accomplish this, I pay close attention to what my clients say and want in a haircutting experience. I don't rush through haircuts, I pay attention to detail, and make sure the client is satisfied with the services we provide. Hard work results in repeat customers and that's what any good stylist wants – Satisfied, repeat customers.
AB: At work you're on your feet and dealing with all kinds of demands all day long. What keeps you motivated and inspired to come in and cut hair everyday?
JD: I love the great atmosphere here. I work with amazing women that make it fun! Most importantly my clients count on me. They need to look good and it starts with a tailored haircut. I'm the one that can make that happen.
AB: Other than your career, what are you passionate about?
JD: Definitely my health and fitness. I want to live a meaningful, positive life. I take my fitness seriously and compete in bodybuilding shows. I was the Bikini overall winner of the Lenda Murray Classic (NPC). So, a sound mind and body is very important to me. I hope along my fitness journey I inspire others, like my clients, to live healthy.
AB: What is your favorite product to work with currently?
JD: Manipulator Matte by Bed Head. It's a great product to give a nice natural look without feeling gunky.
AB: What haircut are you really digging right now for the fellas?
JD: Hmm... the mid-fade Quiff (think fade on the sides and longer hair on top). I love the quiff because it has the ability to look neat and polished or have the messy bed head look that is incredibly popular in modern hairstyles for men. This haircut will often leave my client feeling great after getting compliments from both women AND men! You know it's a good haircut when their friends comment on it!
AB: Who do you look up to as a role model?
JD: I look up to my father as a role model. He's always been a positive figure in my life and I give him all the credit for teaching me to have a good work ethic, to be authentic and kind, and also be strong-minded.
AB: Are you a sports fan?
JD: Yes, I enjoy watching football and going to the Lions games. It's a fun event every time!
AB: Favorite restaurant/food?
JD: I love sushi! One of my favorites around Detroit is the Joe Muer restaurant!
AB: Ideal Date?
JD: My ideal date would be strolling a downtown city to get coffee from a local cafe and find little adventures to go on, like going to an art/science museum.
AB: What do you look for in a relationship?
JD: If they are ambitious and hard-working like me.
AB: What are three things you can't live without?
JD: Let's see... every day I need time to workout in the gym, my phone, and my family and friends.
AB: What's your motto/advice you live by?
JD: I love the quote, "Wherever you are, be all there."
To live in the present moment and to fully commit and engage with my clients, friends, and family - to just live to the hilt!
